Since the 60’s, Nanni Balestrini - poet, writer and visual artist - has taken part to the most radical movements within the European literary and artistic avant-garde, experimenting with all the possible connections between words, text and image. For the city of Florence, he created Verbal Columns, a sitespecific project designed for the Renaissance loggia of the Leopoldine complex.
Once again, Nanni Balestrini works with the precious medium that is tapestry, creating a conceptual piece. Nine monumental tapestries - designed by the artist and produced with the help of BONOTTOEDITIONS creativity and manufacturing experience - upholster the columns of the Novecento Museum, producing an unusual connection with the architecture, the Basilica and Santa Maria Novella square.
In Nanni Balestrini´s Verbal Columns, words - the pillar of grammar and verbo-visual communication - represent an analogy for the column, the basic foundation of architectural syntax.
